News on Updated Procedures in ClinicalSkills.net!

This week it’s all about bowels! We have the following updates for you:

Constipation: Causes and assessment
This procedure has been completely revamped following peer review and now follows a more logical order. The references have also been updated and it now cites the Rome IV (2017) for the definition of constipation.

Constipation: Treatment
Also revamped following peer review, this procedure has gone up by a page and now includes a comprehensive table of laxatives and other medications to treat constipation, with useful notes on mode of action and the best ways of using these laxatives. This procedure includes many new references.

Stool specimen: collection
Stool specimen assessment
Both of these procedures have been updated by the editor following peer review.

Inserting a rectal suppository
Administration of an enema
Wendy Ness, Colorectal Nurse Specialist at Croydon University Hospital—the editor of the constipation and stool specimen procedures mentioned above—has also become the editor of the procedures on administering a suppository and an enema. The first of these now includes additional information on assessing the patient before administering a suppository, and the differences between suppositories administered for local effect and those administered for systemic effect. References have been reviewed and updated where necessary.

The procedure on administering an enema now includes more detailed information on the different types of enema—evacuant and retention—and the need for carrying out a risk assessment before administering an enema.

I’ll be back soon with more updates and news about the website, until then…
