New and updated prodeures for CSWs on ClinicalSkills.net

From ClinicalSkills.net:

I don’t know if you have taken a look at the Healthcare Assistants section on clinicalskills.net recently, but it’s been growing rapidly. We recently added three additional procedures to this section:

Giving a bed bath (HCAs)
Washing a patient’s hair in bed (HCAs)
Facial shaving (HCAs)

These procedures, along with the others in this section, have been edited to make them suitable for an audience of HCAs, particularly those working outside of a hospital environment, although the content remains applicable for HCAs working in acute settings.

The last pages of all the procedures include checklists that can be used for practice assessments. The checklists, some of which include assessor questions, can be printed separately.

To find the new content, from the Dashboard, click on Procedures, then Healthcare Assistants, then Healthcare Assistants again, then on the procedure title. Alternatively, from the Procedures page, put a key word from the title into the Keyword Search.

Look out for more HCA procedures in this section early in 2018!

Check out the HCA/ CSW procedures here: https://www.clinicalskills.net/dashboard/procedures/1201  access with an OpenAthens account off-site

News on Updated Procedures in ClinicalSkills.net!

This week it’s all about bowels! We have the following updates for you:

Constipation: Causes and assessment
This procedure has been completely revamped following peer review and now follows a more logical order. The references have also been updated and it now cites the Rome IV (2017) for the definition of constipation.

Constipation: Treatment
Also revamped following peer review, this procedure has gone up by a page and now includes a comprehensive table of laxatives and other medications to treat constipation, with useful notes on mode of action and the best ways of using these laxatives. This procedure includes many new references.

Stool specimen: collection
Stool specimen assessment
Both of these procedures have been updated by the editor following peer review.

Inserting a rectal suppository
Administration of an enema
Wendy Ness, Colorectal Nurse Specialist at Croydon University Hospital—the editor of the constipation and stool specimen procedures mentioned above—has also become the editor of the procedures on administering a suppository and an enema. The first of these now includes additional information on assessing the patient before administering a suppository, and the differences between suppositories administered for local effect and those administered for systemic effect. References have been reviewed and updated where necessary.

The procedure on administering an enema now includes more detailed information on the different types of enema—evacuant and retention—and the need for carrying out a risk assessment before administering an enema.

I’ll be back soon with more updates and news about the website, until then…

News from ClinicalSkills.net- Procedures for Children

Our latest updates are all about infants and children! Becky Saul, author of the series on Pain Assessment and Management in Infants and Children has updated the three procedures:

Pain Assessment in infants and children
Patient-controlled analgesia
Nurse-controlled analgesia

The procedure on Patient-controlled analgesia has been reworked to provide a better flow through the information. And in all three of the procedures, there are masses of updated references.

We also have a new editor for the two procedures on Hygiene for Infants and Children:

Working with a baby in a cot
Bathing a baby

These have been taken over by Catherine Hewitt, Senior Lecturer in Children’s Nursing, London South Bank University.

If you’ve been working late this week, and particularly if you’ve been burning the midnight oil, you may have noticed that the website has been down for maintenance on a couple of evenings. I’m pleased to report that all the current work has been successfully completed and there’s a noticeable improvement in speed! Thank you very much for your patience while we’ve been carrying out this important upgrade to the server.

I’ll be back soon with more news, until then…

7 and half things you may not know about ClinicalSkills.net!

From ClinicalSkills.net..

Almost two years after launching our new website, even we are still finding out new and interesting things about our website! So here are some features that might be new to YOU…why not give them a try?

ONE
Are you always referring to one or two particular procedures? To make them even easier for you to find when logged into your individual account, go to the procedure, scroll down to the bottom and find the link, “Add to your quicklinks”. A link to that procedure will then appear at the side of your Dashboard.

TWO
If you’re a Super User, you can do the same as in point two, to promote heavily used procedures to people in your organisation. If you select the procedure, scroll right down and click on “Add to organisation quicklinks”, a link to that procedure will appear at the side of the Dashboard for all your users.

THREE
You know the running news titles in pink at the foot of the clinicalskills.net page? If you’re logged in, you can click on those and the link will take you directly to the new procedure/update. (If you’re not logged in, then clicking on the title will take you to the log in page; once logged in, you will land in the new procedure/updated procedure.)

FOUR
If you have an individual account, you can load your photo into your profile so that you can immediately see you’re in your account. (Just click on Profile in the Dashboard, search for your image on your device and upload it.)

FIVE
I’m sure you know already that, for best viewing and printing, you can access the pdf of the illustrated procedures by clicking on the link under the Organisation Notes section. But did you know that you can now also download all the references, key reading references, and any notes you’ve made, relating to each procedure in one go? The link is just above the one to the pdf of the procedure.

SIX
There are now masses of standard tests available to your users, if your organisation has upgraded to the full package including assessments. Just click on Take a test to check out what’s there. Our most recent assessment, added this week, is called “Wound care: pressure ulcers”, to accompany our recently published series on Pressure ulcers.

SEVEN
As a Super User, YOU have access to ALL the question banks that feed into all the tests that are available to you. To view these, when logged into your Super User account, click on Resources Management from the Dashboard. If you’ve upgraded to the full assessment package, you’ll find a couple of hundred question banks in there which altogether contain getting on for a couple of thousand questions. (Heads up, I haven’t counted them exactly but that’s a good estimate!) About 300 of those questions are on medicines calculations. To view the questions in a question bank, just click the title. (Hint: for more help on using question banks and creating assessments, check out the How-to Guides from the Dashboard.)
