Sense about Science

Website of the week:
http://www.senseaboutscience.org.uk/index.php
From the home page:
Sense About Science is an independent charitable trust. We respond to the misrepresentation of science and scientific evidence on issues that matter to society, from scares about plastic bottles, fluoride and the MMR vaccine to controversies about genetic modification, stem cell research and radiation. We work with scientists and civic groups to promote evidence and scientific reasoning in public discussion.

Our recent and current priorities include alternative medicine, MRI, detox, radiation, health tests, the status of evidence in public health advice, an educational resource on peer review and the public language of science.

Digger Watch

Well, here is the final digger watch from the library windows before they are boarded up! Work continues apace, and it is amazing just how interesting it is to watch concrete dry (no really, it has been great to have ring-side seats to watch the progress of the building extension, although rather noisy at times).

Regular Library users at Maidstone can still use the libraries at Kent & Sussex and at Pembury during the closure of the Maidstone site. Out-of-Hours fob holders can use their fobs at these sites too.

Please see earlier posts for full details of how to use the services over the next 6 weeks.

Digger Watch

The diggers have left. Work continues ahead of schedule, and for those amongst you who are still wondering..... NO. It is not a car park OR a swimming pool!

The whole centre is getting an extension. The library will benefit from a new IT suite.

We WILL have to close up over the summer, from 11th August for about 6 weeks. This will mean no physical access to the library at the Maidstone Site but all our users are welcome to use the libraries at Kent & Sussex and Pembury. Some services, such as inter-lending and document supply may be affected in the run up to the closure, but we will keep you informed.

Annual Evidence Update on Osteoporosis
(NHS Evidence - musculoskeletal)
www.library.nhs.uk/musculoskeletal

At the end of June, NHS Evidence – musculoskeletal will release their latest Annual Evidence Update on Osteoporosis. As previously they have sifted the publications in this area in the 12 months up to the end of May 2009 and have concentrated on highlighting systematic reviews, these being the most reliable and least biased evidence available to guide practice and improve knowledge in this area. We hope that, once released, you will take a look and your feedback would be very welcome.

Evidence Update: Learning Disabilities

Annual Evidence Update on Health Needs of People with Learning Disabilities
Launched 29th June 2009
(NHS Evidence - learning disabilities)
www.library.nhs.uk/learningdisabilities

People with learning disabilities have a higher level of health needs than the general population, many of which are unmet. The Learning Disability Health Needs Annual Evidence Update provides evidence summaries and bibliographies of published research for some key health issues:

· Cancer
· Challenging behaviour
· Coronary heart disease
· Epilepsy
· Respiratory illness
· Visual Impairment and People with Learning Disabilities

We know that many people with learning disabilities do not to seek out support from the healthcare system unaided, and that healthcare issues can remain undiagnosed or untreated. The publication of the findings of the independent inquiry into healthcare for people with learning disabilities (the ‘Michael Report’) identified a range of actions needed to ensure adults and children with learning disabilities receive appropriate treatment in acute and primary healthcare in England, and the Department of Health recently updated good practice guidance on Health Action Planning and Health Facilitation.

www.library.nhs.uk/neurological

The NHS Evidence: Neurological Conditions specialist collection is launching its second Annual Evidence Update on Epilepsy on Monday 18th May, to coincide with National Epilepsy Awareness Week.

Leading epilepsy experts from around the UK have read and appraised these for their validity and relevance to the busy clinician. A list of the papers deemed worthy of inclusion, along with expert commentaries by our reviewers, will be freely available on the site from 18th May. MTW Trust Formulary now online

The New MTW Formulary website

Thanks to the hard work of the Pharmacy team lead by Jane Caisley and Kim Fenner all staff now have access to a new on line Trust Formulary. In the past the formulary was published every two years in book form which was not only very labour intensive but the book was out of date almost as soon as it was produced.

The formulary website, which is fully searchable, contains not just a list of approved medicines but also the Trust Antibiotics Policy, an extensive range of guidance on medicines use and answers to some of the most frequently asked questions put to the Trust Medicines Information Centre. It can be updated in minutes for example to reflect the latest decision of the Drugs and Therapeutics Committee, product shortages or new medicines safety data.

Although the website is primarily intended for Trust staff use it is accessible on the World Wide Web so that the information can be viewed for example by staff on-call from home, local GPs and healthcare staff from other organisations. It may even be browsed via a suitable web enabled mobile phone.

The web formulary presents important information on safe and cost effective medicine use in an attractive an easy to use form. It can be found at www.mtw.nhs.uk/formulary/. Why not bookmark it on your PC now!
