Christmas Film- Auditorium, Academic Centre, Maidstone Hospital
Dear all,
Just a little reminder that we will be showing a Christmas film on Wednesday 10th December, usual time of 6pm onwards. As well as some mince pies, we will have the addition of a little magic to entertain us in the dining room before we go in to watch the film, with huge thanks to Steve Lobley for offering to come along to do this for us:
“Steve Lobley (www.stevelobley.co.uk) is an all-round award winning entertainer. An Associate Member of The Inner Magic Circle with Silver Star – this is the highest degree possible via exam.
As a very busy entertainer working primarily in the South East, but not exclusively, in fact his magic has taken him as far as New York, Cape Town and even the QE2. Steve has wide experience across all age groups. Steve was one of the hundred Magicians booked to perform at the world famous London Palladium to celebrate its 100th year. As a Trade Show performer Steve has worked for some of the biggest named global companies such as IBM, BT, Microsoft, Barclays and The AA to name a few.”
The film is down to a vote….. Here were my initial suggestions, feel free to vote for one of these or send me your own suggestions. If the chosen film is appropriate for younger audiences, I would be very happy for you to bring children along and make this a festive event. Please do share with colleagues!
Elf
Miracle on 34th Street
Scrooge (Albert Finney version, of course!)
Muppet Christmas Carol
Love Actually
Arthur Christmas
The Santa Clause
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
The Polar Express
White Christmas
Home Alone
The Holiday
Let me know what you would like to see – hope to see lots of you on 10th December. I will notify you all of the film at the end of next week….

Resource of the week - Google Scholar
Each week the Trust Library service will be promoting a different product available for all members of staff.
This week it is Google Scholar which you can search at http://scholar.google.co.uk/
Google Scholar provides a basic way to broadly search for scholarly literature. You can search across many disciplines and sources: peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles. If the full-text is freely available, it will appear next to your search results.
If you need to do a more advanced search, don't forget about the NHS databases, including Medline and Embase, available at http://www.evidence.nhs.uk (Athens account required). Any full-text journals which the NHS has paid for will appear in these databases.

UpToDate: Not just for doctors
Did you know that UpToDate increases medical knowledge for medical students,
nurses and even patients? We encourage you to adopt UpToDate as a valuable
resource for medical students, residents, fellows, nurses, and all members of
your care team. Use UpToDate as an effective way to encourage informed
decision-making and improved outcomes.
UpToDate is a valuable resource in all stages of medical education
and training:
The nursing team at Swedish Medical Group, a large ambulatory care group in Seattle, WA, standardized on UpToDate as a way to educate nurses and patients to achieve quality-based outcomes. Nurse Educator, Shirley Vacante, RN, BSN, offers these tips on how nurses use UpToDate to support best practices in a clinic:
- 95% of residents report UpToDate was the most effective resource for learning.1
- 20 minutes a day reading UpToDate was associated with an increase in IM-ITE scores comparable to an entire year of residency.2
- Use of clinical decision support resources like UpToDate was associated with improved scores on Internal Medicine Maintenance of Certification Examinations (IM-MOCE).3
- 99% of trainee subscribers say they would recommend UpToDate to a colleague.4
