Sense about Science

Website of the week:
http://www.senseaboutscience.org.uk/index.php

Sense About Science is an independent charitable trust. We respond to the misrepresentation of science and scientific evidence on issues that matter to society, from scares about plastic bottles, fluoride and the MMR vaccine to controversies about genetic modification, stem cell research and radiation. We work with scientists and civic groups to promote evidence and scientific reasoning in public discussion.

Our recent and current priorities include alternative medicine, MRI, detox, radiation, health tests, the status of evidence in public health advice, an educational resource on peer review and the public language of science.

Digger Watch

Well, here is the final digger watch from the library windows before they are boarded up! Work continues apace, and it is amazing just how interesting it is to watch concrete dry (no really, it has been great to have ring-side seats to watch the progress of the building extension, although rather noisy at times).

Regular Library users at Maidstone can still use the libraries at Kent & Sussex and at Pembury during the closure of the Maidstone site. Out-of-Hours fob holders can use their fobs at these sites too.

Please see earlier posts for full details of how to use the services over the next 6 weeks.

Evidence Update: Learning Disabilities

Annual Evidence Update on Health Needs of People with Learning Disabilities
Launched 29th June 2009
(NHS Evidence - learning disabilities)
www.library.nhs.uk/learningdisabilities

People with learning disabilities have a higher level of health needs than the general population, many of which are unmet. The Learning Disability Health Needs Annual Evidence Update provides evidence summaries and bibliographies of published research for some key health issues:

· Cancer
· Challenging behaviour
· Coronary heart disease
· Epilepsy
· Respiratory illness
· Visual Impairment and People with Learning Disabilities

We know that many people with learning disabilities do not to seek out support from the healthcare system unaided, and that healthcare issues can remain undiagnosed or untreated. The publication of the findings of the independent inquiry into healthcare for people with learning disabilities (the ‘Michael Report’) identified a range of actions needed to ensure adults and children with learning disabilities receive appropriate treatment in acute and primary healthcare in England, and the Department of Health recently updated good practice guidance on Health Action Planning and Health Facilitation.

Annual Evidence Update on Urinary Incontinence: 19-23 January 2009

An update of the evidence on this topic from the NLH Kidney Diseases and Women’s Health Specialist Libraries.

The Kidney Diseases and Women’s Health Specialist Libraries are launching the first Urinary Incontinence Annual Evidence Update (AEU) on Monday 19th January. Focusing on both male and female urinary incontinence this AEU brings together the latest evidence on the surgical, drug and conservative management of urge and stress incontinence and Overactive Bladder (OAB).
Expert commentaries summarising the latest knowledge on various incontinence topics such as botox, post-prostatectomy and quality of life issues will be available.
We know that it is very difficult for busy health professionals to keep up-to-date with the huge volume of literature that is published each year and so the specialist libraries do this for you so that you don't have to!
