Library Computers....

Did you know.....?
The Library at the Maidstone site has an independent IT network which enables library users to get access to Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and other web-based mail packages blocked by the Trust.
We can also offer access to the web when the Trust network is unavailable.
This service will soon be available at the library at Kent & Sussex Hospital.

Pembury Library Move

PEMBURY LIBRARY is moving and will be closed from Wednesday 4th October to Friday, 6th October inclusive. Books due for return on these dates will not incur fines. As from 8.30 am on Monday 9th October we will be pleased to see you at WOODLANDS HOUSE, at the north end of the site, near the main car park. Please note 24 hour access will NOT be available during this period.

National Knowledge Week for Psoriasis

This week is National Knowledge Week for Psoriasis.

The National Knowledge Week on Biological Therapies for Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis is being organised by the NLH Skin Disorders Specialist Library to coincide with the release by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) of new guidance on biological therapies in the form of two Technology Appraisals: Efalizumab and etanercept for the treatment of adults with psoriasis and Etanercept and infliximab for the treatment of adults with psoriatic arthritis. Literature Search Training

FREE TRAINING FOR DIALOG (Medline, Cinahl, BNI, Embase, PsycInfo)
We offer free training sessions to help you get the best out of the core databases offered through Athens. These sessions aim to provide participants with the skills to conduct effective searches and print full-text results.
OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the session, you will:
  • Have set up an Athens user account
  • Know which databases you should use for your searches
  • Be able to construct a search strategy in preparation for your online search
  • Be able to log into Athens and conduct an effective search
  • Be able to print / save/ email your results, including full-text, as appropriate
  • Be able to review your results, amend and repeat your searches as necessary

These sessions are offered:

  • At MAIDSTONE in the Staff Education Centre, 13:00-14:00, on the FIRST TUESDAY of each month.

Free Training in your workplace

The Outreach Library Service is for NHS staff working in the community in Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.

I can assist you to access books, journals and electronic resources, and to help you get the information you want, without the need to visit the Health Library. I can introduce you to a range of useful health knowledge resources and point you towards sources for evidence-based. I can also help you with Athens registration and to make the best use of the NHS databases and electronic journals.

I provide a flexible service and sessions can take place at your workplace at a time to suit you. The training is informal and tailored to your interests and the time you have available.

Finding quality health information on the Internet
Finding the evidence
Searching healthcare databases
Searching the National Library for Health
Literature searching skills
Using e-mail effectively

We are pleased to advise that the library at Maidstone Hospital now has a large quantity of CD Roms available for seven day loan. You will find the them listed in our book catalogue with the cases filed in with our book stock. If you wish to borrow any of these items please bring the case to the counter where we will issue the disc to you for loan.

National Knowledge Week For Asthma 22nd-26th May 2006

This week is the National Knowledge Week for Asthma.

The National Library for Health has "the latest available evidence and information within the topics chosen in Asthma. A short article was written for each topic by experts representing the different professional groups involved in respiratory medicine and healthcare. Each topic is accompanied by supporting evidence and patient information, and in the majority of cases a list of references provided by the author. The supporting evidence has been limited to that published in the last two years...."

Maidstone Library PCs

The PCs at the Maidstone Library get very busy during peak times (typically lunchtime and 17:00-18:00). Don't forget that you can phone ahead and reserve a PC for any times during staffed hours.

PCs on all sites are available 24/7 to library members who have signed-up for out of hours access. Contact library staff for details of how register for this service, and use the libraries at any time of day or night.

Patients Library

PATIENTS LIBRARY

It is with regret that the patients library at Pembury hospital has closed. Hopefully it will re-open when the new hospital is built.

Some of our stock of books has gone to the Patient's Library at the Kent and Sussex Hospital. The remaining books were offered to hospital staff for free, however their generosity has enabled us to make a donation of £80 to the Pembury League of Friends.

Book Sale

BOOKS FOR SALE

The Library at Pembury Hospital have some recently withdrawn books for sale. Most are going for only 50p. Money raised will go to buying new books.

Opening hours 8.30 am - 5 pm - Monday - Thursday

New Staff

We would like to welcome a new member of staff to the Trust Library Service.

Myriam Nelmes has joined us as Site Manager, Maidstone Hospital site. Myriam took up the position on 4th January, and comes from the Medway NHS Trust, where she was an Outreach Librarian.
